Well, happy Lundi Gras, all. What a weird world this is; we find ourselves in yet another State of Emergency. It's almost desensitizing at this point! As a southern girl, I can say I am not equipped for these temperatures! I hope you are all staying warm, but am fully aware about how many power outages are all around the state. At this point, we likely all have our generators at the ready, our pipes wrapped and dripping. Please keep checking in on your loved ones, preserve your energy, and take some time for reflection and meditation if possible. While we can't control the weather, we can only ride this out; here are some things you CAN control.
The National Weather Service gives us this advice:
How to stay warm without power:
The NWS advice includes:
Close blinds or curtains to keep in some heat.
Close off rooms to avoid wasting heat.
Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing.
Eat and drink. Food provides energy to warm the body. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
Stuff towels or rags in cracks under the doors.
If you do have power, here are some tips to reduce electricity use:
Turn down thermostats to 68-degrees.
Close shades and blinds to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows.
Turn off and unplug non-essential lights and appliances.
Avoid using large appliances (i.e., ovens, washing machines, etc.).
Businesses should minimize the use of electric lighting and electricity-consuming equipment as much as possible.
Large consumers of electricity should consider shutting down or reducing non-essential production processes.
